Welcome to the Community Trust Foundation Blog

 For Good, Forever

Sandi Rowland, Foundation Director

This summer I joined over 100 colleagues from Community Foundations in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey for a full day of news, information sharing and presentations on a variety of topics related to the Community Foundation world. The meeting was held outside of Philadelphia.

Since CTF is relatively new, we are just nine years old, and I’m really new, just one year on the job, the opportunity to hear from foundations with decades of experience and seasoned community foundation leaders proved invaluable. I have found the people involved with Community Foundations, either as staff or Governing Board Members, to be extremely nice and helpful. Many have years of experience in donor development and program management. I have found my more experienced colleagues to be very forthcoming in sharing their tips of the trade and secrets to success.

Throughout the day we heard from senior leadership from the Council on Foundations, we heard visions on where community foundations are heading, and practical advice on investment issues and working with community partners and community impact.

Since the conference was fairly far for one day’s drive, I carpooled with colleagues from the Baltimore Community Foundation. Our six hour back and forth ride between Baltimore and Philadelphia was also full of great conversations and lots more learning for me. I was anxious to share much of what I learned with CTF’s Board of Directors when I returned. I’m very excited at the potential for CTF as  we build our assets and our impact in the communities we serve.

CTF has achieved accreditation through the Community Foundations National Standards Board. http://www.cfstandards.org/

The Community Trust Foundation is proud to have received accreditation from the Community Foundations National Standards Board. This means that CTF is recognized nationally as being in compliance with best practices in the Community Foundation world. The Community Foundations National Standards Board is a supporting organization of the council on foundations

In 2013 CTF completed a lengthy application process including hundreds of pages of documents explaining how we operate, how we communicate with the public, the types of funds we manage, and how we grant out funds. In fact, the binder of documents submitted is about six inches thick! In each of these areas there are specific guidelines and rules which a foundation must follow to be in compliance with national standards.

We were pleased to have satisfied all these requirements. As stated in our award letter, “National Standards accreditation is a commitment to transparency, excellence stewardship, and leadership.” We are happy to join more than 500 community foundations that have received National Standards Board accreditation.

We also proudly display the National Standards seal on much of our communication so that our donors, grantees and the community at large can feel assured the Community Trust Foundation has achieved the highest levels of excellence in the philanthropic field.
