Helping Garrett County Thrive and Deep Creek Lake Sparkle!

The Deep Creek Lake Watershed Foundation (DCLWF) has taken a big step forward in its mission to protect our beautiful environment—thanks to a grant from the Community Trust Foundation (CTF). The DCLWF is ramping up efforts to support the popular conservation landscaping initiative, Water-Wise for Garrett County, and its standout feature, the Rain Barrel Program.

Over the past four years, more than 185 rain barrels have been distributed to local residents, with 95 barrels provided in 2024 alone! These aren’t just barrels—they’re gateways to smarter, sustainable living. By completing a simple yet invaluable training program, residents receive a complimentary rain barrel to transform their water management at home.

So, why is this program so impactful? Here’s what these humble barrels do:
🌧️ Manage stormwater runoff to reduce flooding and protect our landscape.
🌱 Combat soil erosion and safeguard gardens and yards.
💧 Lower water utility bills—a win for both your wallet and the planet!
🔄 Provide a water source during power interruptions.
🚫 Prevent pollution and sediment from reaching the pristine waters of Deep Creek Lake.

The program goes beyond distributing barrels—it’s about education and empowerment. Residents rave about the workshops, led by the University of MD Extension Service, where they learn:
• Best practices for stormwater management.
• How to use rain barrels for eco-friendly watering, composting, and enhancing native plants.
• Techniques for improving water infiltration and evaporation around their homes.
