For those who knew him, Bert Thiel was considered a Renaissance man, displaying curiosity and proficiency across multiple fields. His thirst for knowledge was continuous throughout his life and was the foundation as a teacher devoted to helping students achieve their greatest potential. His keen intellect and love of teaching culminated in his decision to create the Bertram A. Thiel Mathematics and Natural Sciences Scholarship Fund through the Community Trust Foundation.
Originally from Utah, Bert Thiel began a career at what was then Frostburg State College in the fall of 1970, initially working as a technician in the planetarium and in the audio-visual department. Fellow faculty and staff members would recall the breadth of knowledge Bert had about many fields, including mathematics, geology, chemistry, physics, electronics, astronomy, and photography. He was particularly intrigued by the emerging science of computers and built the first computer on campus, teaching himself basic computer programming and eventually joining the Computer Science Department as an instructor. Uncovering his passion for teaching, Bert earned a Master’s in Education to support the role he felt aligned best with his personal philosophy and interests.
Truly a Renaissance man, Bert Thiel was a gifted artist and accomplished cook, both talents supported by a love for classical music. His home in Garrett County, which he built, included a room dedicated to housing his extensive CD and record collection. His circle of friends, which grew over time, were regularly treated to Bert’s culinary skills and an ambience filled with music.
Stan and Gloria Eisel, close friends of Bert and fund advisors of the Bertram A. Thiel Mathematics and Natural Sciences Scholarship Fund, recall the conversations that resulted in the development of this scholarship. “Bert wanted to ensure that any student who met the scholarship criteria had the opportunity to complete their college experience. The provision that funds would be available to the recipient for four (4) years was a key element in his decision.” As a high school guidance counselor for over 40 years, Stan Eisel has worked for a number of years with the Community Trust Foundation in promoting available scholarships to students seeking financial support to continue their education. As Bert began to consider options, Stan suggested the Community Trust Foundation as a logical partner. “Working through the Community Trust Foundation is a reinvestment in our community. Bert’s thoughtfulness in understanding how important it is for students to have sustainable financial support throughout their college experience is really special. He was the consummate educator, not simply imparting knowledge but also recognizing the needs associated with achieving the goal of a complete education.”
The Bertram A. Thiel Mathematics and Natural Sciences Scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2024 to Colin Sheehe, who is attending Princeton University. In his scholarship application, Colin noted “From an early age, I have always had a passion for mathematics. Receiving the Bertram A. Thiel Mathematics and Natural Sciences Scholarship would assist me in my journey to continue to explore mathematics and related fields in a way that leads to an enjoyable and rewarding career.”
A graduate of Allegany High School, Colin achieved a 4.63 GPA, was 1st in his class of 133 students and scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT. A well rounded student, Colin Sheehe was actively involved in Allegany High School including as a member of the National Honor Society and its President in his senior year, Team Captain of the Mock Trial, a band member (marching, symphonic and percussion) and 1st Chair of the All County Band his senior year and senior year class historian. He has also volunteered his time with the Let’s Beautify Cumberland initiative and the Cumberland Garden Club. While a primary interest has always been in mathematics, Colin’s approach to building his collegiate experience is more expansive. “It is my goal to continue to be well rounded throughout college and beyond. I hope to pursue related fields to work towards a minor or an additional major that will not only open up other career opportunities but also further my understanding of myself and the world around me. It is unfortunate that in today’s world such educational exploration can be financially prohibitive, The opportunity provided by the Betram A. Thiel Mathematics and Natural Sciences Scholarship to receive financial assistance for four years recognizes and supports the value of education for the purpose of true learning.”
