One year ago, Cumberland lost one of its most dedicated and beloved community leaders, James “Snake” Robertson. His name was synonymous with generosity, mentorship, and unwavering service to his hometown. Today, we celebrate his legacy through the Snake Robertson Memorial Scholarship, a fund designed to uphold his lifelong commitment to education and the skilled trades.
Snake Robertson was more than a tradesman; he was a visionary who shaped educational opportunities for countless students in Allegany County. With over five decades in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and his role as Training Director for the Western Maryland JATC, Snake understood the transformative power of technical education. His leadership extended far beyond his profession. He was a pillar of the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, a founding force behind the Leadership Allegany Rising Program, and a champion of local workforce development.
Snake poured his heart into mentoring the next generation, ensuring that young people had the resources and guidance needed to pursue meaningful careers in the trades. His dedication to education wasn’t just professional, it was personal. He saw potential in every student and took active steps to nurture it.
The Snake Robertson Memorial Scholarship, established through the Community Trust Foundation, carries forward this mission. Open to all Allegany County students, the scholarship provides financial assistance for those pursuing education or certification in skilled trades. Recipients may use the funds for tuition at accredited trade schools, certification exams, tools, and other essentials for their careers.
The scholarship honors Snake’s belief that hard work, skill, and dedication should be celebrated and supported. Each year, it will be awarded to a high school senior with strong attendance, academic dedication (minimum 2.5 GPA), and a record of integrity within their school community.
In an era where skilled trades are more vital than ever, this scholarship serves not only as a tribute to Snake’s generosity but as an investment in the future. Tradespeople build our communities, sustain our economies, and create lasting legacies, just as Snake did. His vision was one of empowerment, giving young people the chance to step into rewarding careers that fuel both personal success and community growth.
By supporting this scholarship, donors and community members ensure that Snake’s values remain alive and well that education, hard work, and service are recognized and rewarded.
For those who wish to support the fund, contributions can be made through the Community Trust Foundation, continuing Snake’s work in shaping the lives of future tradespeople. Donate in Memory of Snake Robertson
The Snake Robertson Memorial Scholarship is more than financial aid. It’s a promise that his dedication to education and community will continue for generations.
