George B. Humberson was born June 10, 1901 near Friendsville, Maryland. He was the last child of George and Martha Frazee Humberson. He grew up as part of a large family on a farm known as Blooming Rose. In 1936 he came to Frederick County to participate in the construction of Route 40 between Frederick and Hagerstown. It was there that he met Lenore Morgan who was a young teacher in Frederick County.
Lenore Morgan was the first Child of Jasper W. and Mae Grossnickle Morgan. She was born February 3, 1916 near Wolfsville, Maryland. Most of her childhood was spent on a farm near Wolfsville. Her father was a noted farmer, mechanic and musician. He played the organ for many years at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Wolfsville. After graduating from Middletown High School in 1933, Lenore attended Frostburg State Teachers; College for three years and then began teaching in Harmony, Maryland. It was then that she met George Humberson.
George and Lenore married in 193 7 and subsequently had three daughters-Jo Ann, Martha, and Mary. George continued in the construction industry working a number of years on the construction of National Airport and NIH near Washington. It was during this time that he helped many friends and relatives from both Frederick and Garrett County find jobs. He continued in construction until 1948 when he and Lenore purchased a farm and began farming. He continued in farming until his premature death in 1964.
After several years at home, Lenore returned to teaching in 1943 and in total taught 34 years in Frederick County Schools. In the 1960’s she began attending classes at the University of Maryland and received her B. S. in 1971. Lenore continues to reside in the farm home that she and George purchased in 1948.
George Humberson was always proud of his roots in Garrett County and Lenore Humberson has always had fond memories of her years at Frostburg State. Many family members subsequently attended Frostburg. It is for these reasons that the family has chosen to establish a scholarship for a graduating senior from Northern Garrett High School who is enrolling at Frostburg State University.
This fund provides scholarships to Northern Garrett High School graduating seniors who are pursuing a degree in post-secondary education at Frostburg State University.
