The Guidance Counselor’s Memorial Scholarship was established in the memory of Virgil Hull and his wife Josephine Hull.
Mr. Hull was Keyser High School’s first guidance counselor. Until 1971, he was the only counselor for Keyser High’s 1,000+ students in Grades 7-12. Mr. Hull had a great love for the Keyser community, a place he called home for all 97 years of his life.
Mr. Hull was quick to encourage students to pursue careers that would bring them happiness and contentment. While a college degree could open many doors, he knew from experience that success could also be found in other career choices. He began his professional life as a 10-year employee of the Celanese Corporation of America. He was then called to active military duty during World War II. Mr. Hull served with the 100th Infantry Division as a combat infantryman.
Following military service, he attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education. He taught at Fort Ashby High School for five years and then moved to Keyser High School, where he served as guidance counselor until he retired in 1980. He was very proud to be an educator and never lost his passion for teaching. Even after he retired, he maintained relationships with countless former students, continuing to offer them encouraging words, uplifting notes and pats on the back.
This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Keyser High School that plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in education, focused on Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).
