John Shelton became the basketball coach at Keyser High School in 1940 and remained as a coach, vice principal and principal, retiring in 1980. He and his wife Shirley were active in church and community activities and Mr. Shelton was instrumental in assuring that all students received dental and eye checkups. Through his leadership, the Keyser Municipal Swimming Pool was constructed, and ultimately named in his honor. His nickname “The Rock” referred not only to his physical stature but his steadfastness and dependability.
This scholarship is awarded to one male and one female graduating from Keyser High School. Each recipient must be of good moral character, possess the necessary grades for college entrance, and be a participant in, or have bona fide intention to participate in, an inter-collegiate sport at the college or university he/she plans to attend.
